The League of Women Voters is alive and growing in Marquette County. A prior edition of the league was established in the county in 1968 operating for 38 years before disbanding in 2006.
According to officials of the new incarnation of the league, the effort to revive it in Marquette County began as a result of the 2016 election. Following that election season, a half dozen community members shared a concern that the voting public was becoming increasingly divided.
“We felt that bringing the League of Women Voters back to Marquette County would help preserve our democratic values by reducing the partisan rhetoric which had been escalating, that it would give concerned citizens a proven way to work together for change, and as one of our members put it, that it would help create bridges rather than barriers,” said Darlene Allen, unit chair.
In April 2017, this small group of concerned citizens met with representatives of both the state organization and the Delta County League of Women Voters. The Delta County chapter agreed to accept the Marquette group as an extension unit. New units in the League of Women Voters start off as satellite groups of well-established units. The established units help to guide the fledgling units until they are organized and strong enough to be successful on their own…

The next meeting of the Marquette League of Women Voters, Member-At-Large Unit, will be held Wednesday, Sept. 4, from 6 to 7:30 p.m. at the Peter White Public Library in Marquette.
