Drug abuse prevention starts early

Did you know that favorable attitudes toward drug use are a predictor of early drug use for youth? This may seem like common sense, but changing youth attitudes toward alcohol and other drugs can serve as a protective factor. The old adage “do as I say not as I do” won’t solve this problem. During adolescence, we are developing our own beliefs, through our experiences. These beliefs can be shaped by our relationships with our community, our family and our friends. Creating opportunities for involvement and skill building is vital in helping youth choose their path.

This period of our development is life-changing as well as fleeting. How then do we help our youth choose a healthy, drug-free lifestyle? With this crucial life transition in mind, Marquette County Cares (MC2), funded by Northcare Network, has developed a competition for youth to research and form an understanding of the impact of alcohol and drug use. We challenge youth to create a public service announcement, focused on educating the public about what it means to live a drug-free lifestyle. This is an opportunity to develop a better understanding of how alcohol and other drugs can impact our lives…
