What about wedding cakes in the U.P.? “At the Table” recently talked with three area bakers—Joe Heck, of Joe’s Cakes in Marquette; Marybeth Kurtz, of Negaunee’s Midtown Bakery; and Beth Hintsala, who runs Beth’s Creations, LLC, out of her Ishpeming home.
Hintsala came to baking as a true amateur (a word sharing roots with the French word amour, meaning love): the first wedding cake she baked was for a daughter’s wedding. When family and friends tasted her delectable concoctions, they urged her to go into the baking business.
Heck learned to cook at culinary school, then mastered the art of special occasion cakes through an apprenticeship in New York before moving to Marquette. Kurtz started out with a degree in commercial art; upon graduating from college, she was encouraged to…
